Ocean Beach with Dogs — Pet-Friendly Guide
Ocean Beach is the dog capital of San Diego. Home to one of the first off-leash dog beaches in the United States, OB has built its identity around being pet-friendly. Dogs are welcome at most outdoor restaurant patios, many shops keep water bowls by the door, and you'll see more dogs than strollers on any given day. If you're traveling with your dog, there's no better beach neighborhood in California.
Dog Beach
OB Dog Beach (at the north end of Ocean Beach, where the San Diego River meets the ocean) is the main attraction. Dogs are allowed off-leash on the beach and in the water at all times. The beach is wide, sandy, and packed with happy dogs of every breed. There are no fences — the beach is open and free. Rinse-off stations and waste bags are available. It's a must-visit even if you don't have a dog.
Pet-Friendly Dining
Most OB restaurants with outdoor seating welcome dogs on the patio. Many provide water bowls without being asked. The farmers market on Wednesdays is dog-friendly. Several bars along Newport Avenue welcome well-behaved dogs. OB's casual, outdoor-oriented dining culture makes it easy to eat out with your pet.
Other Dog-Friendly Spots
- Fiesta Island in Mission Bay is a massive off-leash dog area (10 min drive)
- Kate Sessions Park in Pacific Beach has off-leash hours and great views
- Many OB shops welcome dogs inside — look for the water bowl by the door
- Shelter Island has a walking path popular with dog walkers
- Coronado's North Beach allows dogs in the off-season
Pet-Friendly Accommodation
Several OB accommodations accept pets — check when booking. Look for places with direct beach access so morning and evening dog walks are easy. Some vacation rentals in OB cater specifically to dog owners with fenced yards. Hotels in the Mission Bay area also tend to be pet-friendly.
Dog Owner Tips
- Bring your own waste bags (stations can run out on busy days)
- Rinse your dog after ocean swimming — salt water dries out their skin
- Keep dogs on leash on the OB Pier and Newport Avenue
- Bring fresh drinking water — don't let dogs drink ocean water
- Dog groomers and pet supply shops are available right in OB
- Check for foxtails in grassy areas, especially in summer
