How to Get to Ocean Beach, San Diego

Ocean Beach is surprisingly easy to reach. San Diego International Airport is just 4 miles away — one of the closest airport-to-beach connections in California. Whether you're flying in, driving from LA, or arriving by bus, here's everything you need to know about getting to OB and getting around once you're here.

From San Diego Airport (SAN)

San Diego International Airport is only 4 miles from Ocean Beach — about 10 minutes by car with no traffic. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) costs $12–20 depending on demand. For public transit, take the Route 923 airport shuttle to Old Town Transit Center, then transfer to Route 35 to Ocean Beach (about 30 minutes total, $2.50). Rental cars are available at the airport's consolidated rental car center.

Driving from Los Angeles

The drive from LA to Ocean Beach is about 120 miles, taking 2–2.5 hours without traffic (add 1–2 hours during rush hour). Take I-5 South to I-8 West, which ends right at Ocean Beach. From Orange County, it's about 90 miles (1.5–2 hours). The I-8 West exit puts you directly onto Sunset Cliffs Blvd, the main road into OB.

Public Transit

MTS Bus Route 35 connects Ocean Beach to Old Town Transit Center, where you can connect to the Trolley and other bus routes. Route 923 connects Old Town to the airport. The Trolley Blue Line goes from Old Town to downtown San Diego. OB is not directly on the Trolley line, but the bus connection from Old Town is quick (15 minutes). A day pass costs $6 and covers unlimited rides.

Parking in OB

  • Street parking in Ocean Beach is free but competitive, especially on weekends and summer afternoons
  • Newport Avenue and the pier area fill up first
  • Side streets off Voltaire and West Point Loma Blvd usually have spots
  • There's a free lot at Dog Beach (end of Voltaire St)
  • Arrive before 10am on weekends for the best parking
  • If you're staying in OB, many accommodations include parking

Getting Around OB

Ocean Beach is very walkable — the entire commercial district along Newport Avenue is about a half-mile stretch. Most accommodations, restaurants, and the beach are within a 10-minute walk. For exploring beyond OB, a car is convenient but not essential. Bikes and e-bikes are popular for reaching Mission Bay, Pacific Beach, and Point Loma. Bus Route 35 connects to downtown via Old Town.
