Ocean Beach Summer Guide (June–August)
Summer is Ocean Beach at its most alive. Long sunny days, warm ocean water, and the neighborhood's famous laid-back energy draw visitors from all over. Expect highs in the mid-70s, water temperatures warm enough for swimming without a wetsuit, and sunsets that stretch past 8pm. The OB Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off in June kicks off the season, and the Wednesday Farmers Market stays busy all summer long.

What Summer in OB Is Like
Summer in Ocean Beach is warm but rarely hot thanks to the ocean breeze. June can start with marine layer ('June Gloom') that burns off by noon, but July and August are consistently sunny. The beach fills up on weekends but never reaches the packed levels of Mission or Pacific Beach. Dog Beach stays lively, the pier is full of fishers, and Sunset Cliffs draws crowds every evening for the sunset show.
Top Summer Activities
- Surfing is great all summer with consistent south swells bringing warm-water waves
- Catch a sunset at Sunset Cliffs — arrive 30 minutes early for a good spot
- Take a bonfire to the beach (fire rings fill up fast on weekends, arrive by 3pm)
- Walk the OB Pier at golden hour
- Paddleboard or kayak on Mission Bay's calm waters
- Hit the Wednesday Farmers Market for local produce and street food
Summer Events
The OB Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off (late June) is the neighborhood's biggest annual event. Fourth of July at the beach is an OB tradition with fireworks visible from the pier and Sunset Cliffs. The weekly Wednesday Farmers Market runs year-round on Newport Avenue. Check the events page for live music and community gatherings.
Where to Stay in Summer
Summer is peak season, so book accommodation early — especially for weekends and holidays. Ocean Beach has charming B&Bs and the famous OB hostel for budget travelers. Pacific Beach and Mission Bay have more hotel options. Expect higher rates from mid-June through Labor Day.
Summer Packing Tips
- Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 30+) is essential
- Bring a light hoodie or flannel for evenings — it cools down after sunset
- Flip-flops and casual clothes are the OB dress code
- A reusable water bottle for the beach
- Wetsuit not needed for swimming but boogie boarders may want a spring suit
