Ocean Beach Week-Long Itinerary — 5–7 Day Trip Plan
A week in Ocean Beach gives you time to truly experience San Diego like a local. Use OB as your home base and explore a different part of the city each day, always returning to the neighborhood's laid-back evenings, incredible sunsets, and unpretentious dining scene. This itinerary balances beach days, cultural attractions, and neighborhood exploration.
Day 1: Settle into OB
Check in and explore your neighborhood on foot. Walk Newport Avenue, grab lunch at a local spot, and get the lay of the land. Afternoon at the beach or OB Pier. First sunset at Sunset Cliffs — it never gets old. Dinner at one of OB's best restaurants. This is your decompression day.
Day 2: Cabrillo & Point Loma
Drive 15 minutes to Cabrillo National Monument for panoramic views of the harbor, ocean, and city skyline. Explore the tide pools at low tide and visit the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. Lunch at Liberty Station (former Naval Training Center, now a dining and arts hub). Afternoon at Shelter Island for bay views and marina walks.
Day 3: Balboa Park Day
Spend a full day at Balboa Park. Visit 2–3 museums (the Air & Space Museum, Natural History Museum, and Museum of Art are highlights). Walk through the gardens and the Botanical Building. If you have kids or love animals, the San Diego Zoo is a full-day commitment on its own. Evening back in OB.
Day 4: La Jolla
Drive or take the bus to La Jolla (30 min). Morning at La Jolla Cove — watch sea lions, snorkel if conditions allow. Walk Prospect Street for upscale shops and galleries. Visit Birch Aquarium at Scripps. Lunch with ocean views. Afternoon at La Jolla Shores beach. Return to OB for sunset and dinner.
Day 5: Beach Day & Local OB
Your mid-trip recovery day. Sleep in, coffee at your favorite OB cafe (you'll have one by now). Full beach day — surf, swim, read, people-watch. Hit the Wednesday Farmers Market if it's the right day. Explore OB's antique shops. Long sunset session at the cliffs. Dinner and drinks in the neighborhood.
Day 6: Coronado & Downtown
Take the Coronado Ferry from downtown (or drive over the bridge). Explore the historic Hotel del Coronado, walk Coronado Beach (rated among the best in the US), and bike along Orange Avenue. Afternoon in the Gaslamp Quarter or Little Italy for different dining and shopping vibes. Optional: USS Midway Museum if you're into military history.
Day 7: Your Choice & Farewell
Revisit your favorite spot or do something you missed. Options: Torrey Pines hike (stunning coastal views), Mission Bay kayaking or paddleboarding, North Park for craft breweries, or simply another perfect OB beach day. Final sunset at the cliffs. Farewell dinner at your favorite OB restaurant.
