Ocean Beach Weekend Itinerary — 2-Day Trip Plan
Two days in Ocean Beach is enough to experience the best of San Diego's most authentic beach neighborhood. This itinerary covers the must-do highlights — from sunrise surf sessions to sunset at the cliffs — while leaving room for the spontaneous wandering that makes OB special. Follow it loosely; OB rewards those who go with the flow.
Day 1: Beach, Pier & Newport Avenue
Start your morning with coffee at one of OB's local cafes on Newport Avenue. Walk down to the beach and stroll the OB Pier — at 1,971 feet, it's the longest concrete pier on the West Coast. Spend the late morning at Dog Beach (even if you don't have a dog, the scene is entertaining) or the main beach. Grab fish tacos or a burger at one of OB's legendary casual spots for lunch. Afternoon: explore Newport Avenue's antique shops and vintage stores — OB has San Diego's largest antique district. End the day at Sunset Cliffs for one of the best sunsets in California. Dinner at a local restaurant, then drinks at an OB dive bar.
Day 2: Beyond OB — Explore San Diego
Hit the Wednesday Farmers Market if it's a Wednesday (4–8pm on Newport Ave). Otherwise, start with breakfast in OB and then venture out. Option A: Head to Cabrillo National Monument (15 min drive) for panoramic views, tide pools, and the historic lighthouse. Option B: Drive to La Jolla Cove for snorkeling, sea lions, and lunch with ocean views. Option C: Spend the day at Balboa Park visiting museums and the zoo. Return to OB for a final sunset and dinner. Pick up last-minute souvenirs from the local shops on Newport Avenue.
Weekend Tips
- Parking in OB is tight, especially on weekends — arrive early or walk/bike from your accommodation
- Don't rush — OB is a place to slow down
- The best restaurant experiences are the casual ones
- Bring cash for the farmers market and some smaller shops
- OB is very walkable — you don't need a car once you're here
