Ocean Beach Winter Guide (December–February)
Winter in Ocean Beach is San Diego's best-kept secret. While the rest of the country bundles up, OB enjoys mild temperatures in the 60s, uncrowded beaches, and some of the best whale watching on the West Coast. December brings the beloved OB Holiday Parade and December Nights in Balboa Park. It's the perfect time to visit if you prefer a quieter, more local experience.

What Winter in OB Is Like
Winter in Ocean Beach is mild and relaxed. Daytime temperatures hover in the low-to-mid 60s — warm enough for walks, hikes, and even some beach time. Rain is possible (San Diego gets most of its annual rainfall between December and March), but storms typically pass quickly and the sun returns. The neighborhood feels more local in winter, with fewer tourists and a cozy small-town atmosphere.
Top Winter Activities
- Whale watching season runs December through April — gray whales migrate along the coast, visible from Cabrillo National Monument or whale-watching boats
- Surfing peaks in winter with larger northwest swells (experienced surfers only at breaks like Sunset Cliffs)
- Visit Balboa Park's museums without summer crowds
- Hike Torrey Pines — cooler temperatures make the trails more comfortable
- Explore Old Town San Diego's holiday decorations
Winter Events & Holidays
The OB Holiday Parade (early December) features local floats, marching bands, and a very OB Santa Claus. December Nights in Balboa Park is San Diego's biggest free holiday festival with free museum admission and live performances. New Year's Eve is celebrated at local OB bars and restaurants. The Farmers Market continues every Wednesday year-round.
Where to Stay in Winter
Winter is the off-season for San Diego tourism, so you'll find the best rates on accommodation. Hotels and B&Bs in Ocean Beach and surrounding neighborhoods drop prices significantly. It's a great time for budget travelers to experience the area without peak-season pricing.
Winter Packing Tips
- Layers are key — mornings and evenings can be cool (high 40s) while midday warms up
- A rain jacket for occasional storms
- Long pants and closed-toe shoes for hiking
- Binoculars for whale watching from the cliffs
- A wetsuit is essential if you plan to surf (4/3mm recommended)
